Specialists learn the practice of prescribed burning

In the beginning of July some specialists from Nature Conservation Agency (NCA) travelled to Nuuksio national park in Finland to get the chance to see prescribed burning with their own eyes.

Participants of this tour admit that they have seen lots to learn – starting with job scheduling accuracy. Few days before the event our specialists were informed that weather conditions are optimal and Finnish specialists are going to proceed with prescribed burning in Western taiga.

NCA specialists say that preparatory works had been done very accurately and everything was prepared to react to any accidents. Luckily everything went smooth with no accidents. In approximately one hour 2ha were burned and the works were finalized.

The burned site was previously prepared – some of the trees were cut down in previous winter. A part of the dead wood was left on the ground, also branches were left in the forest – to stimulate burning. Across this site a narrow zone was dig up, revealing soil. During the burning the surrounding area was watered and water was available all the time.

A surprising fact was that the burned territory was no fenced – any visitors and tourists could freely walk there. By NCA specialists this was noticed as a proof that society trust nature conservation specialists and vice versa.

Altogether it is planned to burn 100 ha this year.
