Hydrology restoration in bog woodland „Gulbju sala” completed

To prevent overgrowth with pines and shrubs and to improve favorable conditions for moisture loving plants, fungi and lichen, since December of 2014 works on hydrology restoration of bog woodland are being conducted in „Gulbju sala”, within the Gauja National Park.

„Gulbju sala” is a bog that has been drained more than 60 years ago. The aim was excavation of peat. Over the time the drained area has begun to overgrow, ground vegetation has changed to dry environment loving species. Nature values of the bog woodland cannot adapt to the drained environment. Draining has caused increased evaporation, increased desiccation of peat and changed the functions of bog ecosystem. Nowadays this territory is included in the nature reserve zone of Gauja National Park. And this means that the main aim in this territory is nature protection. In this case – restoration of hydrological regime.

Works have been conducted in 37 bigger and smaller ditches with the total length 13,95 km and total impact area 135 ha. Four peat dams are built on three drainage ditches and 29 wooden dams on five drainage ditches. 29 drainage ditches are partly or totally filled up with peat – this has been an innovative approach in Latvia which is considered to be more effective. All works were strictly regulated by technical project. The technical project is approved by State Environmental Service, Amata district and Pārgauja Municipality. Restoration works according to procurement procedure are done by Ltd. “Castor melio”. Works are proceeded on state owned land and there will be no impact on other territories then “Gulbju sala”.

Filling up of drainage ditches and building dams was completed on 12th of March.
